“Are you prepared to take a donation of coins” asked a pretty young mother standing in the doorway of Modi’in’s new book shop.  What a question!  She then produced four very large and very heavy jars from the boot of her car.  It took my husband Alan and I several hours that evening to count and sort, copper and silver coins covering our kitchen counter top from corner to corner.

The contents of the four jars of coin was a whopping NIS 1580.00.  We asked permission to put this wonderful donation toward NEVE ESRA, an afternoon center for severely high risk children aged between 9 - 11 which we support in conjunction with the local social services.  This intervention helps to keep these precious children out of care and in their own homes providing a warm and loving environment and the security they so sadly lack.  During the course of the summer they moved premises and in the process, some of their furniture (which was none too good in the first place) got ruined.  They have asked us, over and above our regular commitment, to try and replace some of this furniture, so this generous donation could not have come at a better time.

There reply was equally as generous.  “Who would have thought that a couple of years of dropping loose coins in a jar could amount to so much.  It is our pleasure to have made the donation and it makes us even happier that it was so much more than the minor gesture we expected.”
