This year’s event, with the generous cooperation of the Gaash Golf Club, was held on June 12 and attracted a full field of 60 golfers who gathered together to honor the memory of the late Celle Mandel. Celle, herself a keen golfer, was a compassionate member of the ESRA Welfare Committee for many years. She assisted many disadvantaged immigrants to find a place in Israeli society, giving of her time to their needs. This year the chosen ESRA charity for the income from the golf competition was “Give a Child a Future”, which supports the less fortunate children in our communities.

Judy Reefe, herself a long-time member of ESRA and a very active member of the Gaash Golf Club, devoted her organizational skills and determination to make this an enjoyable and memorable day, with the accompanying goal of raising as much money as possible for the above fund which is close to her heart.

At 08.00 competitors began arriving, and started the morning with coffee and delicious fresh croissants prepared by the Greenfield Club Restaurant. More and more familiar faces from small but supportive group of players in the Israeli world of golf appeared and were welcomed by Judy and her committee – Marilyn Cooper, Gill Sadeghi, Norma Kaufman, Gary Vandermolen and Mark Joffe. Each player was given a set of balls and a special pencil marker, and raffle tickets for specially donated prizes were on sale. The gift of two flight tickets to London for a hole-in-one was promised by Mark.

The competition began at 09.00 – besides the main trophy for the best couple’s score, players were also competing for the longest drive for men and for women and for the shot that landed nearest to the pin. Bottles of fresh water and an energy bar for each player kept us going plus the thought of being able to make a hole-in-one at the 9th hole! By 14:30 the last pair had handed in their score card at the club house and an appetizing buffet lunch served in the Greenfield topped off a day of enjoyment. Speeches of thanks were given to the Gaash Golf Club, Judy and her committee and Celle was remembered in a speech given by her close friend, Grace Bartur. Celle’s son, Barry Shaked, who is himself a keen golfer, captain of the Caesarea Golf Club and chairman of the Israel Golf Association, added his own tribute to his mother. This was followed by the awarding of the prizes and the raffle draw.

Thanks again to Judy Reefe for all her hard work and for providing us with a great day of golfing.
