Dr Rachel Korazim addresses ESRA Jerusalem

ESRA Jerusalem held a series of lectures given by Dr Rachel Korazim on "Windows to Israeli Society through Literature". Rachel has a PhD in Jewish Education and is an expert on Jewish education in Israel and worldwide. She has an ingenious way of explaining the essence of Israel by looking at it through the eyes of its authors. We were treated to extracts from works by Yehuda Amichai, Rachel, Haim Guri, Amir Gilboa, Yitzhak Shalev, A.B Yehoshua, Sayed Kashua and Emile Habibi. The lecture topics included “Motifs from the Bible”, "“The Image of the Other” and “Connection with the Land.”

Rachel has a unique talent for choosing works that evoke the essence of life in Israel, past and present, in all its complexity, its joy and its heartbreak. We were grateful to have had the opportunity to “feel” the Israeliness that sadly eludes us, living as we often do in a cosseted Anglo bubble. Originally planned to encompass four topics, the series was extended by popular demand, and a new series is planned for next fall.
