Elkan Levy ...facts and figures

ESRA Haifa's November meeting hosted Elkan Levy. Well known as a public speaker, Elkan, who now lives in Netanya, is a solicitor by profession who practised law in England until his aliyah in 2011. He held many other positions in Great Britain, including that of Director of the Small Jewish Communities and President of the United Synagogue for many years.
The talk focused on General Allenby and the First World War. We sat in awed silence as the words, facts and figures just rolled out of Elkan’s lips. Aided by the projector and the computer and our new head-attached microphone, Elkan presented the history leading up to the war and the various battles against the enemies in the region at the time.
The Balfour Declaration was discussed and also the roles played by the British and German army officers. He covered the subject so thoroughly and so interestingly that there wasn't any need for the usual question-time.
Our Chairman, Melvyn Sandler, thanked the speaker and presented him with our special Certificate of Appreciation.
Over refreshments we received excellent feedback about the evening, resulting in a promise from Elkan to return next year to present another of his many expert topics.
Forty members and friends attended the meeting which was held at Beit Hecht on the Central Carmel.
