Opening in 2012
The sixth annual walk for Benji’s Home (HaBayit shel Benji) will take place this year on FRIDAY MAY 4. There is a new, family friendly route - still in rural Raanana, but more accessible for parents who would like to bring their young children in strollers. The walk is 3km or 6km, and those who are feeling particularly energetic are welcome to complete the route twice over! There will be a pre-walk warm-up with 'Great Shape' to get us in the mood, and after the walk there will be various activities for all the family. It promises to be a great morning out in the fresh air.
The really exciting news is that Benji’s Home will be opening in 2012 and the first fifty lone combat soldiers will be moving in for the duration of their army service. It is being built in memory of Benji Hillman, a major in the elite Egoz Unit, who was killed in the Second Lebanon War in July 2006, three weeks after his wedding. Benji’s Home will provide a truly warm home for soldiers coming from abroad who have no family here, or those who come from underprivileged families in Israel. The soldiers will also be able to stay at the home for a short period after their army service if necessary.
Meals will be provided, as will laundry facilities. There will be a library, two large gardens, a computer and call center, leisure activities and a gym. It will be staffed by a manager and an education/vocation director, and volunteers will be needed to help in many different ways.
In the meantime, we hope we can once again count on the support of ESRA MAGAZINE readers for this year’s walk, to help make it the best so far.
The walk is on FRIDAY MAY 4 2012 starting 08:00 from the Amphitheater Car Park, Park Raanana
Donation: Adults NIS 100, Soldiers, Students NIS 50
