AS a non-Southern African, I was amazed by the tremendous impact that 27 Yakirei Zion (chosen by Telfed – the South African Zionist Federation in Israel) -, have had on the State of Israel. Telfed, in an impressive ceremony held at Beit Hatfutsot, selected the award-winners from amongst immigrants from Southern Africa as part of their celebrations of 60 years of Israel and their own Diamond Jubilee. The recipients reflected a range of interests spanning the 60 years since the establishment of the State, and all have demonstrated creativity and initiative, and have pioneered change and development. Telfed is the official immigrant association for Southern Africans, providing them with support and absorption services.

Merle Guttmann, president and founder of ESRA, was recognized for her tireless efforts in enhancing social awareness. Recognized primarily for pioneering and developing ESRA and the ESRA MAGAZINE, for many tens of community  projects and for her long-term work, Merle has contributed widely to other organizations as well, including the Israel Center for Self Help, of which she is currently chairperson. The award recognizes the spirit of volunteerism, commitment, initiative and responsibility – all of which she has consistently shown since her aliyah in 1962.

Other ESRA volunteers receiving awards included past chairman, Hertzel Katz for his contribution to several voluntary organizations and for enhancing the work of many institutions. Hertzel has championed causes and taken many steps toward improving Israel’s society.

Maurice Ostroff was also recognized for his years of contribution to Israel, especially in his role as a founder of Cohav, an outreach program connecting thousands of people, dealing with the issues of anti-Semitism and false propaganda.

ESRA is proud that these recipients have been honored for their years of public service, all pursued with modesty and dedication.
