Sarelle Weiner ... baking in Modiin

Story & photos by Suzanne Naimer

Welcome to the world of Sarelle Weiner, a very talented and personable “cake artist” who turned her hobby of cake-making back in Chicago into a successful cake design and decoration business, “ Edible Gems”. Now living in Modiin, ESRA Modi’in was lucky enough to spend an evening with Sarelle learning Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot dessert ideas.

The evening was sponsored by Kitchen Science, Walder Science Center, of which Sarelle is the director. No longer making the exquisite cakes that made her famous worldwide, Sarelle nonetheless demonstrated a number of beautifully designed (and tasty) apple-based dessert recipes,  and gave tips about decorating to make the plate and dessert look extra special.

In addition, Sarelle educated us with scientific information about flours and gluten. She ended the evening by stretching a tiny piece of strudel pastry into a dining room table-sized piece and turning it into the finest strudel that her guests had ever tasted!

A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all. Thank you Sarelle.
