Helene Stalbow Retires

Esra would like to thank Helene Stalbow who is retiring after many long years as Esra's Volunteer Bereavement Counselor. Counseling is one of the most important services Esra offers to English speakers and Helene did this with total dedication.

The following words of appreciation were written by one of the grateful people who turned to Helene in time of need.

Unfortunately many people have only heard of Helene Stalbow under the stress of

battling the results of a tragedy and death. Sorrow brought me to meet Helene, a volunteer bereavement councilor for Esra, and an angel to me. She opened her door and heart widely, bringing me relief, often tears, and eventually, acceptance.

Helene, with her quiet voice, her ability to sympathize and even laugh in the face of death is an unusual person. Not everyone can empathize with another person's suffering. I doubt if many can face adversity and still smile.

Helene has also faced personal losses - the death of a beloved grandson and also her loving husband. With her inner strength and fortitude she has managed to keep on living, which is the hardest task in life.

The act of volunteering is an integral part of Helene's life. Without asking for rewards she has brought help to so many people. She has achieved what so many wish for, the title of "Being a Human Being." She has given of herself for others and we all thank her.

Helene is relinquishing her ‘job’ as Esra’s bereavement counselor – which is one of the important services Esra offers to English speakers.

Susan Kurnedz, a new immigrant from England, is an experienced bereavement and loss counselor.  She is setting up a bereavement counseling center in Netanya under the auspices of Esra, with training and ongoing supervision for volunteers by Esra’s volunteer professionals.
