On the second night of Chanukah we were invited by the Youth Advancement Division of Netanya municipality to share their Chanukah party at the Right Track Center in Kiryat Nordau. ESRA finances the salaries of the teachers who help the youth with their schoolwork. ESRA also provides second-hand (donated) equipment such as DVDs and computers and direct financial aid for outings and special needs which are beyond city support.

The Chanukah party was a special one as it was the first time the parents agreed to come to the center to see where their children go every day and what they do there.

The candles were lit and blessed by the neighborhood “Kes” (the community rabbi) and even though he spoke in Amharic his presence and tone had us spellbound. He spoke for fifteen minutes and even with all the kids in the hall you could not hear a pin drop.

After he left the entertainment was turned on and we were treated to an amazing, ear-shattering group of youngsters called “Red Earth” who played various drums with much gusto and talent! The audience loved them.

The next stage took a more serious turn when Sassi, the Youth Division Coordinator, explained the responsibilities of his division and its staff and how the parents could help their children benefit from the professional and recreational help and facilities provided by the municipality and ESRA. During the course of the evening the parents asked many questions, this being the first time some of them learned about the activities of their local youth center. Most hadn’t received any feedback from their children as to what happens at the center. They were thrilled at what they heard and full of thanks to ESRA for providing the teachers to help their kids. Plans were put in place to continue such contacts. A power-point presentation was also shown which highlighted the learning and sports including a bicycle and road-safety project.

The evening ended with donuts and much laughter from the kids and it was a real joy and privilege for those of us who attended.
