Before making aliyah, Adin(Ed) Tevet asked one of neighbors in California for some hints on learning a new language.

This is a true story. I could not have made it up. The year before our aliyah the shaliach (emissary) told my wife, Sandi, and me that we would need to bring a hefty sum of money to Israel in order to have any chance of establishing ourselves. Consequently I left my job as a university professor and went to California where I could earn a much higher salary in the high-tech industry. One of our new neighbors was a retired gentleman who was fluent in seven different languages, including Hebrew. One day I said to him, “In a few months Sandi and I will be making aliyah and we will have to learn Hebrew. You have learned seven different languages. Can you give me any hints that will help me to learn Hebrew?” He said, “I have a method that I use to learn languages. To learn Hebrew you first have to learn two words: 'Mah zeh?' [What is this?]. You point to something and ask 'Mah zeh?', and from the answer you will learn the word in Hebrew. For example, you point to a table and ask 'Mah zeh? Somebody will say shulchan and then you will know that shulchan is the Hebrew word for table. You point to a chair and ask 'Mah zeh?' and somebody says kisay and then you know that kisay is the Hebrew word for chair. You will learn word after word, and soon you will be speaking Hebrew”. I had never been good at learning languages and so was delighted to now have a method for learning Hebrew.

A few months later Sandi and I were in an El Al airplane flying to Tel Aviv. Sandi was sitting on my right. On my left was sitting a little girl, about four years old, and further to the left sat her parents. After a while the little girl and I fell into conversation. We spoke in English, of course, but I noticed that whenever she talked to her parents she would speak to them in Hebrew. I started thinking, “This little girl knows Hebrew. I don’t have to wait to get to Israel before I start learning the language. I can start right here. I can learn the Hebrew words for eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and maybe even more. I’ll start by learning the Hebrew word for nose.” I pointed to my nose and asked 'Mah zeh?' and the little girl answered etsbah [finger]. And that’s how I began to learn the Hebrew language.
